The Business of Software: What Every Manager, Programmer, and Entrepreneur Must Know to Thrive and Survive in Good Times and Bad

From Publishers Weekly

Cusumano, a professor at MIT’s Sloan School of Management and coauthor of Microsoft Secrets, offers a comprehensive overview of the software business and how the right approach is key to the success of technology companies. Cusumano first identifies the key distinction between software and other businesses. In fact, he believes it is unlike every other business because software doesn’t have one purpose but becomes whatever function it is handling for a part (more…)

Cheap Industrial Robot machining direct from CAD information.

Demo of Global Robot’s robotic CAD CAM system. The robot paths are generated directly from CAD data. The robot is a six axis, 1994 ABB IRB 6400 with S4 M94A controller. The robot has a 120kg payload and a reach of 2.4m. This example is fitted with a high speed spindle cutting foam but the system can be used on many different materials including wood, GRP, metal, plastics and others. Applications include milling, profiling, gear cutting, deburring, water jet cutting, plasma cutting, polishing, prototype model making and rapid prototyping. Accuracy depends on the tooling and robot used but expect around 0.1mm.
CAD files that can be used include G-CODE and APT-CL. Prices for this type of system start at £9,995 GBP (around $14,995 USD) including the robot, path generating software and training.

3d animation | Wind Power | Anifex computer animation | Industrial Design | Product Design

http://www.anifex.com
3d animation industrial design – product design of a 3d animated wind power generator that demonstrates wind power technology for an online 3d animation presentation, trade show exhibit and 3d computer animation video DVD. Anifex 3d creates high quality 3d animation for the industrial design, product design and wind power industries. Anifex 3d animations are created with the most powerful 3d software packages available 3d Studio Max and Maya. Anifex computer animation also uses Adobe products including After Effects and Sound Booth to complete the video editing and compositing of our 3d animation videos. The Evolution of Fire wind power 3d animation was created to demonstrate Anifex’s 3d ability to market industrial design and product design. The entire 3d model was created in Maya so that the parts, gears, belts, wind blade, etc. actually move in sync with each other. This allowed the 3d animation to achieve the photo realistic 3d quality by all the parts performing their function correctly. Anifex felt that it was important to draw the viewer in and make the connection between the hypothetical caveman’s first discovery of fire, which may have resulted from lightning hitting a tree and creating a spark. This connection was originally going to be created as a one cell cartoon that Anifex was going to place on the product design. As an afterthought, it was decided that it would have much more impact if a 3d animated character was used instead. The 3d character originally started out as a 3d poser model and was completely morphed into the finished version in mudbox. After the 3d morph in mudbox, the caveman 3d character went back into Maya for the final touches, including adding over a million particles of hair. The final 3d animation of the caveman scene was 3d rendered with four different lighting passes to achieve the realistic effect of the lightning crashing in the background and the fire flickering in the foreground. After Anifex had the 3d animated caveman sequence, there needed to be a clever way to make the 3d animation seamless between the caveman and 3d product design simulation. Anifex achieved this by using lighting effects that flash several times from dark to light, which gives the viewer the sense of lightning crashing. The product design simulation was also rendered in three different lighting passes to create the light, dark and wireframe 3d model. The entire 3d animation from concept to completion took 3 weeks, including render time. Verifying Industrial Control Software

Google Tech Talks
June, 4 2008

ABSTRACT

In this talk I will present the results of mathematically verifying third party flight control software. I will then present the results of mathematically verifying automatically generated code using The Mathworks code generation facilities and compare the cost against conventional development including V If time permits I will also present a small example of the form of the automatable formal verification of a specification in Simulink. The principles of the approach are generally applicable to other modelling languages that provide automatic code generation.

Speaker: Colin O’Halloran
Colin has worked in the area of Formal Methods for 25 years. He is a Visiting Professor at the University of York and a Visiting Fellow at Kellogg College Oxford University. He was a member of the European Space Agency’s Board of Inquiry into the failure of Arianne 5’s first flight.
His current interests are in the commercial assurance of software.

How do I get my cell phone to connect to my VoIP phone to make calls from it?

My VoIP phone has only the RJ-45 port and no USB port to connect to a USB bluetooth adapter. How do I get around that and what products are recommended?

You would actually have to own a phone that supports both protocols. They are in the making, but they aren’t on the market yet.

What type of small business software would you recommend to correspond with contacts and addresses?

I’m self-imployed and have a piano tuning business started, but I need some business software. The only two things I have are Quicken 2004 and Quickbooks Simplestart (not the full version). Would either of these help me maintain a list of about 500 contacts to email, send mail, print out labels, etc??

What would you recommend? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

– Stallion
